When painting and sketching outside I aim not just to capture the 'form' of the landscape but also my 'experience' of the moment and place.  The marks I make with the brush and palette knife are loose and expressive in order to convey feeling and foster a sense of life.

I am drawn to scenes with strong perspectives and well balanced compositions. Paintings structured in this way helps the viewer's eye to be guided round the picture.  This, along with using the right tone and colour temperature, allows the viewer to make sense of what they're seeing.  My paintings also feature hard and soft edging between elements of the picture to explain depth and create focus on the important areas of the work.

When we look out across a landscape we are naturally drawn along the seductive contours of the hills, tree lines and skies, and a painting should do the same.
